The Climate Action Incentive Program is a Canadian federal government program that provides funding to eligible households and businesses. It exists in provinces and territories that have adopted the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change. The funding helps offset the increased costs of complying with the carbon pricing system. That system was implemented in these jurisdictions starting in 2019.
The 2018 budget introduced The first Climate Action Incentive Program. In its first iteration, it provided $155 million per year to households and businesses. This included up to $100 million for households, up to $40 million for small and medium-sized businesses, and up to $10 million for Indigenous communities.
The Canada Revenue Agency delivered the program.
The program expanded in scope and funding since it was first introduced. In 2019, the program expanded to provide up to $170 million per year to households and businesses, including up to $50 million for small and medium-sized businesses, and up to $10 million for Indigenous communities.
For the reference year 2021 (2022 payments), the payments reached between $373 (Ontario) and $539 (Alberta) for individuals. The payments are between $186 (ON) and $270 (AB) for a spouse or common-law partner. $93 (ON) to $138 (SK) was offered per child under 19. Finally, the amount was $186 (ON) to $275 (SK) per first child in a single-parent family.
